Local Charities Benefit for Competition Win
Three public-spirited prize-winners who came out tops in a ‘Sustainability’ competition run by Chipping Sodbury-based housebuilder, Redcliffe Homes, have all donated their winnings to local charities.
North Somerset-based animal sanctuary Holly Hedge, and Many Tears dog rescue centre based in Carmarthenshire in Wales share the first prize of £100, thanks to Andy Godden, Redcliffe’s head of design, planning and development.
Second prize-winner, construction director Andy Shelbourn, used his £50 winnings to buy Easter Eggs to be enjoyed by service users of Chipping Sodbury-based charity, Smile Independent Living.
And Redcliffe’s marketing and sales co-ordinator, Mandy Parker, gifted her £25 to Kingswood Foodbank.
Andy Godden, whose winning ideas focused on how to reduce, reuse and recycle waste throughout the organisation, said:
*“I submitted quite a variety of suggestions, mainly focused on waste management because the construction industry has a major part to play in reducing waste.
“According to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, 62% of waste generated in the UK in 2018, was from the construction, demolition and excavation industries – that’s quite a heavy responsibility.
“The competition was a great idea on the part of Redcliffe Homes because it’s now got the whole team thinking about how we can improve our own waste management profile and we’re now undertaking a comprehensive review of how we can improve as a business, on sites as well as at head office.
“Reducing, reusing and recycling will be our key targets, and for starters the team is concentrating on ways to ensure less waste goes to landfill and our CO2 emissions are reduced, with the focus on packaging, transporting, storage and use of materials, as well as recycling and disposal.”*
Green initiatives now being actively pursued at head office range from reducing paper to creating a wildlife garden, while on site electric car charging points are being installed on future sites and planting for wildlife is taking place.
Established in 1979, Redcliffe Homes is an award-winning independent housebuilder with its head office in Chipping Sodbury, see www.redcliffehomes.co.uk
Developments with current availability are located in Chippenham in Wiltshire and Hempsted in Gloucestershire.
